Addictions Series 1

BEWARE OF ADDICTIONS!

WHAT IS AN ADDICTION?

An addiction is described as a mental obsession (uncontrolled craving or desire) for something (an object, gadget, behaviour, activity or substance such as alcohol, drug, etc.). It is further described as a compulsive and psychological or physical dependence on something. Addicts usually do anything possible to get/use the substance (alcohol, drug, etc.), or object (mobile phone, internet, etc.) they are addicted to.

Addictions can ruin your life. They will not allow you to live a life with definite aim or purpose. They will steal all your dreams for your future, for your family. In the next articles I give a self-examination test for some of the addictions such as addiction to mobile phone or cell phone, internet, T.V. alcohol, etc.

Are you addicted to mobile phone?

MOBILE PHONE (CELL PHONE) ADDICTION

Read each of the following questions carefully and answer YES or NO to each question honestly. If you answer YES to five or more questions, then you are a mobile phone addict. Remember, if you cheat, you're only cheating yourself.

1.Do you have your cell phone with you constantly, and feel restless if it is not there right next to you even while eating, sleeping, attending meetings, praying, playing, etc.?
2.Do you fiddle with your cell phone whenever you have a little free time, or even when somebody is talking to you, or when you are attending a meeting?
3. Do you feel the need of calling someone as soon as you leave the office or home every time?
4. Do you always feel anxious about your cell phone, especially when you are unable to use it (during meeting, travel, class, prayer services or worship)?
5.Are you uncomfortable and fidgety (nervous/restless) when you are not using your cell phone?
6.Do you feel the need to talk on the phone almost all the time?
7.Do you take frequent breaks during work in order to talk to someone on the cell phone?
8.Do you usually talk on your cell phone while driving, walking, working, shopping, etc.?
9.Do you experience high levels of anxiety, stress, or insecurity whenever you are without your cell phone in your pocket or bag?
10.Do you sleep with your cell phone under your pillow or on a stool right next to the bed? Do you think that you cannot sleep well if that phone is not near you?
11.Do your friends and family members make fun of you for using the mobile phone too often and for silly reasons?
12.Do you sometimes believe your phone is ringing, but when you go to answer it or listen attentively you find it wasn't ringing at all (known as 'phantom ringing' or a hallucination)?
13.Has the number of calls made by you increased significantly day by day?
14.Do you get a shock when you see the balance in your account zeroing too fast (if pre-paid) or your bill too high (if post-paid)?
15.Are you unable to resist special offers on the latest cell phone models? Do you go on changing the models of mobile phones?
16.Have you had problems at work or school because of your cell phone use; that is did you get any scolding or warning for its misuse in those places?
17.Do your family members or friends criticize, joke, scold or forbid your too frequent and reckless use of mobile phone?
If you have said yes to at least five questions, then it is not you who are using the mobile phone, but the mobile phone is using you. Your greatest possession (mobile phone) is possessing you. You will learn how to get liberation from its slavery, if you follow up these lessons till the end of the series. These articles are adapted from various sources.
